Wooden crate of fresh organic vegetables

What Is a CSA Box?

CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. You pay upfront — weekly or seasonally — and receive a box of whatever the farm harvested that week. The upside: hyper-fresh, local produce that supports small farms directly. The downside: you don't always control exactly what arrives.

For greens buyers, CSAs can be excellent — farms load boxes with leafy greens, especially in cooler seasons when greens are most productive. Here's how the major options rank.

Should You Choose a CSA or a Delivery Service?

Choose a CSA if: you want the most locally-sourced produce, you're in an area with strong farm options, and you're okay with some variability in what arrives each week.

Choose a delivery service like Misfits if: you want to control exactly what you get, you need nationwide availability, and you prefer lower prices over hyper-local sourcing.

Many buyers do both — a delivery service for staples like spinach and kale, and a local CSA for seasonal variety and discovery.
